Soil quality and fertility dynamics under a continuous cassava-maize rotation in the semi-deciduous forest agro-ecological zone of Ghana

چکیده

The practice of crop rotation is known to significantly influence soil nutrient dynamics, depending on the type and crops involved. As such, a field study was conducted find out effect continuous cassava-maize rotation, where mineral fertilizer only applied maize crop, nutrients dynamics quality thereof under varying periods. revealed that Soil Organic Matter (SOM) levels nutrients, such as total nitrogen, available phosphorus exchangeable cations (potassium, calcium, magnesium, sodium) declined with period. Long term maize–cassava led subsoil (20–50cm) acidification. measured by Carbon Management Index (CMI) different aged rotations decreased age, longest period giving least quality. These results observations imply long reduced resilience cropping system for sustainable production. A regression analysis CMI identified crucial role N ( r 2 = 0.56) K 0.44) in sustaining productive improved within semi-deciduous forest agro-ecological zone. It thus, recommended enhanced targeted organic inorganic fertilization regime could be deployed improve inherently low increase yields.

Hardpan and Maize Root Distribution under Conservation and Conventional Tillage in Agro-ecological Zone Iia, Zambia

Hardpans (plough/hoe pans) are commonly believed to restrict plant root growth and crop yields under conventional small-scale agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa. This study questions the notion of widespread hardpans in Zambia and their remedy under conservation tillage. Soil penetration resistance was measured in 8x12 grids, covering 80 cm wide and 60 cm deep profiles in 32 soil pits. Large and...

Economic cost of deforestation in semi-deciduous forests — A case of two forest districts in Ghana

a r t i c l e i n f o The ecological, economic and socio-cultural roles of forests are under threat in Ghana due to the high rate of deforestation. Efforts are being made to combat this problem through rehabilitation measures. However, the costs of deforestation and restoration benefits are not adequately estimated. This paper fills in the gap in knowledge by providing an empirical estimation o...

Cullars Rotation : The South ’ s Oldest Continuous Soil Fertility Experiment

on this site led to the discovery of K deficiency in cotton, which had been referred to earlier as “cotton rust” (Atkinson, 1891, 1892). Today, the experiment is a 3-year rotation of: 1) cotton followed by crimson clover, 2) corn harvested for grain and followed by winter wheat, and 3) soybeans double-cropped after the small grain is harvested. The soil is a Marvyn loamy sand (fine-loamy, silic...
